2-Day Course – Conducting and Reporting an Independent EIA Process

The responsibilities of the Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) towards the environment are to give effect to Section 24 of the Constitution, by ensuring a sustainable development that does not impact negatively on the receiving environment.

As an EAP can you afford being investigated? Being blacklisted by the relevant environmental authority? Or worse, being criminally prosecuted in your private capacity? Or maybe you just need a refresher course?

The 2-day course will teach you, as the EAP, how to conduct and compile an independent EIA process in compliance with the National Environmental Management Act, Act 107 of 1998 (NEMA) and the 2014 EIA Regulations. The course outlines inter alia:

  • Basic Principles of the NEMA and 2014 EIA Regulations,
  • Application of the Mitigation Hierarchy (and Identification of Alternatives),
  • Responsibilities of the Public Participation Officer and Specialists under Guidance of the EAP,
  • Responses by the EAP to I&AP comments,
  • Incorporation of Other Permit Requirements into the EIA Process (e.g. WUL, WML, AEL)
  • Incorporation of Specialist Studies into the EIA/BA Report,
  • Different Environmental Impact Assessment Methodologies,
  • Inclusion and Assessment of Cumulative Impacts,
  • Compilation of Site-Specific Environmental Management Program (EMPr),
  • Statement and Recommendations by the EAP.

On this 2-day course, to be presented by Peter Teurlings in Johannesburg on 26 and 27 March 2018, you will be taught how to write in such a way that no bias towards your client/the applicant can be shown. The course will be interspersed with practical work (based on real experiences) and end with an examination on the last day. A certificate of attendance will be issued to the successful candidate.
